First Impressions
By Dr. Ron Hinson
Behind the Scenes
The outstanding work of Woman's Missionary Union in supporting Baptist missions and providing missions education for all ages has blessed countless churches with mission-minded leaders and those who have taken the challenge of the Great Commission of our Lord to heart. Since its beginning in 1888, WMU has become the largest Protestant missions organization for women in the world, with a membership of approximately 1 million. WMU's main purpose is to educate and involve adults, youth, children, and preschoolers in the cause of Christian missions. Although originally geared towards women, girls, and preschoolers, both genders are active participants in WMU organizations and ministries today. The auxiliary status of the WMU means that WMU is self-governing and self-supporting. WMU of North Carolina depends on its support from an annual offering, now being received known as the Heck-Jones Offering, named for the first officers who led the organization for fifty years - Fannie Exile Scudder Heck, president and Sallie Bailey Jones, corresponding secretary. These two women were only 24 and 16 when they began their ministry. Their commitment to missions and ministry grew and extended to reach those in their own city and around the world. That is the focus of WMU…sharing Christ and ministering in His name. Please join with me in prayerfully remembering and supporting the work of WMU in our church and state. Join in supporting WMU projects. Understand that it is WMU that instilled a missions heritage in the minds and hearts of
